Introducing our Learning Management System

The Curriculum Domain is pleased to announce Canvas as the Learning Management System (LMS) for Adelaide University, which was informed by subject matter experts from across both the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia.

This system will enable a fit for purpose learning design and delivery platform for the future institution, best meeting our curriculum requirements for Day 1 (and beyond) and ambition to deliver Australia’s most contemporary teaching and learning experience.

Although this technology is already deployed at the University of Adelaide, a new instance will be implemented that aligns to our future vision. Canvas is a leading LMS across the tertiary and secondary education sectors with a 44% market share across Australia and New Zealand leveraging the platform. It’s flexible and scalable with contemporary features such as AI tools, interactive analytics, instant content delivery, mobile learning, and service and cloud-based solutions to enhance engagement.

We know that this decision will mean a change for our staff and students. The new Canvas instance will not be used for active teaching until 2026 and we will adopt a progressive implementation approach. The system is now operational so that we can undertake initial configuration, to support new course development from June 2024. In the lead up to Day 1, there will also be a supported process to migrate content that exists in Moodle and Canvas, to the new Adelaide University instance of Canvas.

Training for enabling teams will commence from April 2024 and broader training will align to course development work from June 2024. This will include a dedicated “sandpit” environment where staff can test and explore key functionality and familiarise themselves with the new system. Our intent is to ensure staff feel prepared and confident ahead of teaching from 1 January 2026.

The Adelaide University LMS will be complemented by the previously announced new Curriculum Management System (CMS), CurV by Global IT Factory, to enable the revitalisation of our curriculum for contemporary learners.

From today, the Curriculum Domain is also launching a co-creation activity focusing on graduate qualities. The vision for Adelaide University’s curriculum is to be future-focused, contemporary and industry-relevant, enabling our graduates with transferrable skills. Building on the ideas and insights from the IdeaPlace challenge last year, we are inviting all staff to complete a survey to further guide us in shaping a framework that is both aspirational and resonates with staff, our students and partners. You can access the survey here, which is open until Friday 19 April.

Lastly, the Vice Chancellors have also penned their first opinion editorial for Times Higher Education for the year, focusing on the refreshingly honest tests, tensions, and triumphs of transformation. They provide a behind-the-scenes account of activities to date, including some of the early curriculum development work. You can read the article here.
