Smaller things in life

A lilypad with water droplets

Lilypad

Whilst I am about looking for things to photograph or digging up worms with our chickens, I notice a whole other world right around us. The intricate details of little bugs and mosses, and the fresh clear veins that run through the leaves of trees serve as a reminder of the humbling complexity of our world.

We are often told to be reminded of the big picture, that there are always bigger things going on. However, I find it refreshing to consider the small things. Like a worm trying to find a nice damp spot of dirt, or the many legs on those bugs that curl up when you poke them. Perhaps you are asking what we can learn from all these small features of our daily worlds that are commonly overlooked? Perhaps there even is some grand philosophical reasoning that they could represent?

The small things in life perhaps put my anxiousness and worries in check? The humble worm is clearly such a small critter in a huge world, but it doesn’t seem to faze them. They don’t ponder what to do next and where to go, or whether they’ll see it all. They do the best they can in a cosy patch of earth. No more, no less (but their butt also looks like their head so…).

Maybe even considering a grand philosophical dimension to the smaller things in life is really a waste of time. The answer that I merely just like observing different textures and details is enough for me. Reminding yourself that there is a whole other world around us on a smaller scale might just serve to be relaxing and humbling when we take the time to observe it.
