Getting out into the Fringe

Every year between late February and March Adelaide comes to life. I think everyone would agree it is a great time of year and the state earns its stripes as ‘the festival state’. However, do you ever feel like you don’t enjoy it enough? Every year I see the beautiful lights, artists and colours that line the streets and before I know it, the festival season is over. When the time flies by as it always does, I’m left asking myself, did I make the most of it?

How to make the most of it?

Fringe is a great time of year, but it can sometimes leave me feeling like I haven’t made the most of it so, how can I? One of the biggest things I want to do is to see more shows and artists! Every year I use the excuse of ‘needing to save money’ or ‘being too busy’ but, I am just making excuses. To push myself out into the fringe and the festival fever I am trying to save and plan for an evening at the fringe instead of spending money or going to dinner with friends. Whether it be a celebration at the end of a long week or planning to go to the fringe with friends instead of somewhere else, I am trying to find ways to incorporate the fringe into a fun university life.

Although it can be expensive to buy tickets, I am always seeing free tickets that pop up at times to various shows. This is a great way to navigate the overwhelming choice that the fringe offers as well as push myself out of my comfort zone. Jumping at the chance for free tickets has already brought me to ‘adults only magic’ and some great slam poetry.

Incorporating the fringe into my social life

Another great way that I’m trying to get out and about in the fringe is by incorporating it into my social life. Instead of catching up with a friend on campus for a coffee or at the Unibar, I try suggesting the fringe and a walk through some of the beautiful spaces that have popped up.

The only thing that seems to spread better than coronavirus is the arts and festival culture during fringe season. So, no matter how busy I get I am going to try to get out there and make the most of it this year.
