South Australia’s best kept secret

Lake with blue sky

Myponga Reservoir: the view from my kayak on the shorelines

On my day off I was invited out to explore a place I had never gone to (or heard of). Located an hour from Adelaide’s CBD, Myponga Reservoir, was a paradise I was surprised to find.

When I arrived, there was a giant shady tree which seemed to be a popular spot for a group of kangaroos (which made my day). I was beyond impressed by the nature and became more mesmerised the more I looked. The huge body of water held people that were kayaking, fishing and resting by it. Beyond the water was a forest and paddocks. My immediate thought was ‘damn, this looks like Alaska – how is this in SA?’. The water was so blue, skies were clear, and the water twinkled brightly from the sun.

I was fortunate enough to go kayaking the whole afternoon – an unforgettable experience (and some work for the arms haha!). I caught myself mesmerised by the surrounding nature and how you could hear the birds. The adjacent forest looked straight out of Hunger Games District 12 and Narnia. It was lush and green – and a cool change to the usual dry gum tree scenery I’m used to.

Exploring Myponga Reservoir was an amazing experience that I was excited to share. So if you’re looking to have a picnic, kayak, meditate, relax, hike or meet some kangaroos – this is the perfect place to escape to. If you’re feeling burnt out or stressed from upcoming assignments, I would recommend setting aside the afternoon on a sunny day to explore this incredible location – you won’t regret it!
