Joys of a birthday

It was my birthday yesterday but it ended looking a little different from what I had envisioned.

I absolutely love celebrating birthdays and I was bummed that COVID ruined my initial plans. I had postponed a friend gathering and knew I would not be able to see all my siblings. Yet regardless of these ‘unprecedented times’, there were still some aspects that were unaffected.

Here are some of the great things that I love about birthdays.

  • Appreciation for the people in your life. Though I could not see most of them, it still made me feel incredibly grateful to receive beautiful birthday messages and phone calls from my loved ones. I’m also a twin so my birthday is equally about celebrating my sister and our twinship.
  • Chance to reflect. Instead of moping about getting one year older, a birthday is instead a chance to reflect on your achievements. I also love using the time to set new goals for myself. My reflection often consists of writing myself a letter to my future self to open up the next birthday.
  • Treat Yo’ Self. Tom Haverford and Donna Meagle have it right. Did I eat half a packet of chocolates and McDonalds yesterday? Yes. Am I feeling guilty about it? Absolutely not! Will I also be shopping online for a little birthday treat this weekend? Most definitely.
  • Guilt-free break. I also treated myself to a much-needed break by choosing to not do any study or work on any projects.

Ultimately, I realised throughout the day that I was so blessed to still see some friends and family, eat junk food and cuddle my cat. It is a crazy time right now, so even a small birthday celebration is better than nothing!
