Facing fears and buying a bike

I recently bought a bike. I haven’t owned once since I was a pretty little kid.

I have always been terrified of riding a bike. I am very afraid of heights, always have been, and hate things where I feel out of control, like roller-coasters. I recently decided to face my fears and, as the saying goes, get back on the bike – literally.

My main criteria for getting a bike was that it needed to be reasonably low so that I would feel I could easily steady myself by putting my feet down on the ground. I know it sounds ridiculous coming from a 25-year-old man, but the idea of riding a bike that is high enough that I can only just scrape the ground with my toes is simply terrifying.

Having found the right bike, I am now hoping to ride it into the city each day to attend uni (once the virus passes). I am looking forward to the freedom it will give me, the money I will save on the bus, ubers and car parking, and the fresh breezes I will enjoy while cycling the short journey home.

Now I just need to overcome my fear of cycling in traffic. Not only do I now have to worry about simply falling off the bike, I have to make sure I don’t crash into anything and no one crashes into me!

I’m looking forward to the challenge. I’ll let you know how I get on.
