Future in Focus: Inspiring the next generation of health researchers
The Robinson Research Institute recently hosted its first group of High School students through the Future in Focus Work Experience Program — an engaging and hands-on introduction to careers in science, medicine and health research.
Over three days, Year 10-12 students explored topics in fertility, reproductive health, genetics and neonatology through lab visits, research demonstrations and interactive sessions with scientists, clinicians and PhD students. The program gave participants a first-hand look at how discoveries in the lab translate into improved health outcomes for women, children and families.
Students learned about topics such as utilising AI and machine learning in endometriosis research, commercialising scientific discovery, or what it is like to complete a PhD. They also toured state-of-the-art facilities, including the neonatal intensive care unit at the Women’s and Children’s Health Network, laboratories at the Adelaide Health and Medical Sciences building, the Adelaide Health Simulation Suite and the Clinical Research Facility, before attending the RRI Annual Research Symposium — where they experienced a day of cutting-edge research presentations and discussions.
During their visit, students also heard from the Adelaide University Future Students team about university courses and career pathways. As part of the program, the Institute also announced its 2026/2027 Future in Focus Scholarship recipient, Tayhia, who will receive financial support of $2,000 over two years, designed to enhance her educational journey during the senior High School years.
We thank the students for their enthusiasm and curiosity, and the many staff and researchers who contributed to making this inaugural program a success.
