Giving Day 2023

Dear colleagues

For almost 150 years, our University has taken pride in shaping the leaders of tomorrow and finding solutions to global challenges. Today, I want to express my sincere gratitude for your ongoing support and commitment to our students, research and our University.

Your valuable contributions are transforming lives and contributing to the development of a stronger society.

Today is our first Giving Day. It is an important day in the University calendar, and one I have been championing since becoming Vice-Chancellor. This day encapsulates the spirit of giving, unity, and positive change, and allows us to celebrate the generosity and commitment of our community.

My partner Mandy and I are passionate ambassadors for one of the featured causes, the Indigenous Support Fund, which we support annually through the University’s Workplace Giving Program. Together with the University and our broader community, we are committed to improving access to higher education for First Nations Australians. This Fund helps ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students will have access to participate in tertiary education and can facilitate improved outcomes for students.

Established in 2021, we've already witnessed the positive impact of this initiative through the story of Talara McHugh, the inaugural recipient. Talara, now on the verge of completing her third year of study, is pursuing her dream career in media and journalism, in part thanks to the opportunities made possible by this scholarship.

You can learn more about the 15 Giving Day causes and how you can contribute by visiting the Giving Day website: givingday.adelaide.edu.au. You might also be interested to read about the matched giving opportunities and how our community can double the impact of their support today.

Celebrations will also be held on our North Terrace, Roseworthy and Waite campuses between 10am and midday today. All staff and students are invited to enjoy a free morning tea, and the company of friendly animals as we come together to celebrate the spirit of giving.

I wholeheartedly encourage each of you to visit one of the campus events today and join us in celebrating our community, our impact and our Giving Day.

Thank you for being a vital part of our University community and for your continued dedication to shaping a brighter future.

Together, we are making history through the power of education and innovation.

With best wishes
Peter
