COVID-19 fatigue

I feel a little bit guilty for writing this, given the truly horrific human cost (much more severe in other parts of the world than Australia) and currently untold but almost certainly devastating economic cost of the coronavirus pandemic, but to be frank, I'm over it.

I'm over the wall to wall coverage. I've definitely heard enough of the word 'unprecedented', of endless speculating about what the future will hold and what (hint, no one really knows) and the saccharin assertion that we are never alone and 'all in this together.'

From a political standpoint, we're not in this together. People like me, with relatively secure employment in the services sector that can be performed from home, am not in this together with people who have lost their jobs. Or with people who have had to continue working on the front line in hospitals and supermarkets, particularly during those scary few weeks when it looked like the shops might get violent and the health care system might be overrun.

I understand the value of wishing into existence a sense of camaraderie, and acknowledge that it is better to talk about the idea of community than to succumb to rampant individualism. But my fatigue with it all is growing.

If you feel anything like me, my advice would be to disengage as best you can from COVID-19 news. Yes, I appreciate I am fortunate to be able to do so, but at this time, it feels necessary.
