This course surveys the history of religious art in Asia over the past two millennia. The course focus will shift each year according to the current exhibition and display program of the Art Gallery of South Australia to variously include the art of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain traditions. The evolution of aesthetics and iconography in India and its wider influence in the rest of Asia and the context of the philosophy and practice of these religions will be explored and discussed.

    Learning & Teaching Modes
    The lectures provide broad discussion of selected topics relevant to the history of Asian Art and work on display in 'Treasure Ships', which are complemented by focused tutorial case studies centred on oral presentations and group discussion of the prescribed tutorial readings and images. It is essential that students complete the weekly tutorial readings in order to share ideas, interpret subject matter, develop essential analysis skills and work together cooperatively. Material covered in the lectures and tutorials also provides the basic content for the final piece of assessment. 
     
    The Gallery sessions will be delivered by Curators at Art Gallery of South Australia around work in the exhibition Treasure Ships.
