Topics include decontamination and sterilisation of medical devices, the clinical management of the patient with an infectious disease or infection, the teaching/learning process in staff education and other contemporary issues within infection control.

Course Learning Outcomes
1 Design an effective infection control program for their health care facility that is based on current evidence based practice 2 Discuss the causes and control measures of specific infectious diseases 3 Discuss the principles used in cleaning, disinfection and sterilisation in a health care facility 4 Illustrate the teaching and learning principles necessary for developing an educational program related to infection control and integrate this into practice. 5 Explain the causes of nosocomial / iatrogenic infection and strategies used to contain them 6 Discuss the influence of the physical environment on the implementation of infection control measures 7 Formulate a plan to implement infection control principles influencing general patient care practices.

Learning & Teaching Activities
Learning & Teaching ModesThe course materials consist of a Study guide, readings and three Clinical Scenarios. There are three pieces of written assessment. The nature of infection control nursing is such that much of your learning will be grounded in your practice. Therefore, although it is not assessed formally, it is incumbent upon the student to forge the links between practice and theory.
The weeks of the Study guide consist of commentary to guide you through the prescribed reading along with activities to assist your understanding. A comprehensive series of readings is provided in recognition of the fact that some students may not have ready access to good library facilities. Nevertheless, you are encouraged to read beyond the course reader wherever possible. You are also advised to note carefully the work that you are required to complete. The program of reading is very substantial. Links for the prescribed articles are on MyUni. You are encouraged to become familiar with accessing materials from libraries, databases and the Internet.
The information below is provided as a guide to assist students in engaging appropriately with the course requirements.While all students work at a different pace it is expected that study for this course will be approximately 24 hours per week of your time. Assessment DetailPlagiarism and referencing module
In order to avoid plagiarism, students need to understand the meaning of citation, paraphrasing, quotation, and referencing. The module is an online quiz designed to ensure that student work is not plagiarised and source material is properly acknowledged according to the guidelines in the School Academic Manual. Students are encouraged to work through this quiz as many times as they need to ensure that they have a thorough understanding of these guidelines.
The module is used as a formative assessment that has no percentage allocated to a final grade

Drawing on the material that you have covered in the first three weeks, select two infectious diseases not addressed in week two and prepare an infection control management plan for nurses working in the area having either a patient or patients with each of these diseases.
The management plan should outline the disease process, including the transmission of infection and source of infection, reservoir and the nursing management of the patient. Although you may briefly discuss the medical management of the patient this is not the focus of this assignment.

You will be provided with two clinical scenarios of a patient with an infectious disease. You are required to choose one clinical scenario for this assignment.
After reading the clinical scenario you will be required to answer a series of questions in relation to the information provided within the clinical scenario. The information provided in weeks 3–9 will assist you to answer the questions.
Length: 25 minute presentation (2500) word equivalent)

For this assignment you need to select and present a current contemporary issue in infection control nursing. The choice of issue may be any aspect of infection control nursing and can include discussion on policies, procedures, and equipment or professional standards
