Social context of dentistry aims to increase students awareness of the role of social context in shaping an individual?s dental behaviours and the implications of this for clinical practice.
Evidence-Based dentistry aims to equip students with the skills necessary to sustain and enhance the clinical practice of dentistry using scientific information published in biomedical journals. Topics include biostatistics and epidemiology.

Course Learning Outcomes
- Develop a hierachy of scientific evidence needed for clinical decision-making
- Recognise aand be able to evlauate studies of disease frequency and disease risk
- Understand methods used for evaluating diagnostic tests
- Identify and apply to clinical practice information from studies of disease etiology
- Critically evaluate studies of preventionand treatment
- Use principles of risk assessment, traeatment evaluation, and decision making in clinical dental practice

An estimated 3 hours per week Semester 1a which includes attending class meeting/lectures.
Three workshops for a total of 5 hours plus preparation time for workshop activity.
Practical excercise of taking a medical history and time collating the information and summarising with other group members.
An estimation of 3 hours per week for Semester 1b which includes attending class meetings/ lectures
Five x 1 hour tutorials plus preapration time (preliminary reading of scientific papers) for participation in tutorials.
