Course Code ENS 2031 Course Chamber Music 2B Coordinating Unit Elder Conservatorium of Music Term Semester 1 Level Undergraduate Location/s North Terrace Campus Units 1.5 Contact Up to 2.5 hours per week Available for Study Abroad and Exchange Y Prerequisites ENS 2030 Restrictions Priority is given to Bachelor of Music students but course is available to non-music students (by audition) Course Description A series of Chamber Music Workshops and tutorials provides an environment in which students can investigate the nature of Chamber Music and the musician's role in a small ensemble. Students develop skills in ensemble playing and rehearsal techniques through the preparation and performance of appropriate chamber repertoire.
Students are encouraged to form their own group prior to enrolment. Participation in the program is dependent on the availability of a place within a viable ensemble. Work prepared through Early Music Workshop, Brass Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Guitar Ensemble is also assessable.

Course Learning Outcomes1. To offer students a variety of lecture/ workshop-style presentations by staff, guest artists and advanced students focussing on stylistic analysis, rehearsal techniques and performance.
2. To provide increased familiarity with a wide range of chamber music repertoire
3. To provide through the workshops, a supportive environment for student groups presenting works in open tutorials.
4. To provide an environment in which students can investigate the nature of Chamber Music and the musician's role in a small ensemble
5. To develop skills in ensemble, rehearsal techniques and management of the rehearsal process
6. To enable students to experience supervised rehearsals in preparation for performance
7. To encourage the live performance of chamber music through the Assessment Concerts.

Learning Activities Summary
- The weekly Chamber Music Workshop will feature lecture/demonstrations by the Australian String Quartet, various staff members, guest lecturers and visiting artists. It will also provide a forum for student performances, supervised rehearsals, discussion and analysis of chamber music repertoire.
- Students will select appropriate chamber repertoire in consultation with their lecturers. Chamber Music Tutorials with specialist staff will assist the students in the preparation of their ensemble programs. Students are expected to undertake a minimum of 3 hours unsupervised rehearsal in preparation for each tutorial session. Five tutorials are provided for each group per semester.
- Repertoire prepared for and supervised through Early Music Workshop, Brass Ensemble, or Percussion Ensemble can be assessed as Chamber Music, and may also be presented in Chamber Music Assessment Concerts.
Sick Leave, Compassionate Leave or Professional Development Leave may, upon application using the relevant Leave of Absence form, be approved by the Course Coordinator. (See Leave descriptors in the Conservatorium’s Participation and Attendance Policy outlined previously, for details.)
Where a student fails to maintain 100% attendance at Chamber Music Workshop they will incur a three (3) mark penalty for each unapproved absence, this being applied to the final total performance mark for the semester – ie. after all other assessments have been completed and calculated. Unapproved late arrival or departure before the scheduled finishing time may, at the Co-ordinator’s discretion, be regarded as an absence.

PARTICIPATION AND ATTENDANCE POLICY
All students enrolled in courses taught by the Elder Conservatorium of Music are expected to participate actively and positively in 100% of required rehearsals, workshops, classes, lectures, tutorials and performances.
The Conservatorium recognises that extenuating circumstances may occasionally affect a student’s ability to participate in a rehearsal, workshop, class, lecture, tutorial or performance. In such cases leave may, upon application, and using the relevant Leave of Absence form, be approved by the course coordinator.
The following types of Leave are applicable:
- Sick Leave. In cases of sickness, an original medical certificate must be supplied with the relevant Leave of Absence form within 7 days of return to classes. Students must make every effort to notify the relevant staff member of an impending absence for reasons of sickness. Sick Leave will only be approved if the relevant staff member is notified of the student’s impending absence before the rehearsal or performance in question.
The relevant staff member may, in exceptional circumstances, waive the requirement to produce a medical certificate if they have clear evidence of illness and believe that the procurement of a medical certificate is deemed unnecessary or impossible in the circumstances. The form will need to be annotated to that effect as part of the approval process.
- Compassionate Leave. Leave may be granted at the discretion of the relevant staff member for cases of family bereavement or other such occasions where the student has been adversely affected by circumstances which were unforeseen and legitimately beyond their control. Please note that Compassionate Leave will only be granted in exceptional circumstances and must be applied for using the relevant Leave of Absence form.
- Professional Development Leave. Leave may be granted at the discretion of the relevant staff member in cases where the student has made sufficient case that the activity occasioning the absence is of considerable professional and educational benefit. Professional Development Leave must be applied for, and approved, in advance using the relevant Leave of Absence form.
