Course Code PERF 2024 Course Conducting 2B Coordinating Unit Elder Conservatorium of Music Term Semester 2 Level Undergraduate Location/s North Terrace Campus Units 1.5 Contact Up to 2 hours per week Available for Study Abroad and Exchange Y Prerequisites PERF 2023 Incompatible GENMUS 2024 Restrictions Priority is given to Bachelor of Music students but course is available to non-music students (by audition) Course Description Continued development of conducting techniques (all standard beat patterns; initial development of expressive gestures and skills for reflection of musical character; use of the left hand; entries, releases, fermata, tempo and character changes); leadership skills; score reading, analysis and marking (orchestra, band and choir); developing appropriate aural skills; effective rehearsal techniques and planning; program building and concert planning; repertoire and resources, including set works; introduction to specific choral and instrumental techniques.

Learning & Teaching Activities
Learning & Teaching ModesThis course will be delivered through 12 weekly 2-hour workshops. Student learning will be very ‘hands on’ with students regularly conducting the class as an ensemble using selected repertoire prepared by the students before each class. Lecturer feedback is given in each workshop.
The information below is provided as a guide to assist students in engaging appropriately with the course requirements.In addition to the weekly 2-hour workshops, students will be expected to engage in private study as follows:o Up to two hours of private practice of conducting and associated gestural skills learnt in the workshopso Two hours of private score study and preparation of music excerpts and examples introduced in the workshopsTotal weekly workload: 6 hours
Learning Activities SummaryContinued development of specific skills and techniques for working with instrumental ensembles including:
Further development of basic conducting techniques including:1. stance and body language2. all standard beating patterns with appropriate subdivisions3. basic legato and marcato conducting styles4. entries, releases, cues, fermata5. initial development of expressive gestures6. independent use of hands including expressive and functional use of the left hand7. changes in metre, tempo and character changes8. effective conducting with the hands and with the baton9. introduction to score reading (orchestra, band and choir), analysis and score marking
Introduction to effective planning and rehearsal management including:1. rehearsal planning, preparation and time management2. ensemble management – in and out of rehearsal3. leadership issues4. effective verbal communication5. effective rehearsal techniques6. introduction to specific choral and instrumental techniques

Assessment Related RequirementsIn addition to the assessment tasks referred to above, 100% attendance at weekly classes is expected.

Score Study assignments 1 & 2: 25% each
Both practical assessments will enable the student’s to exhibit their developing conducting skills and their developing ability to convey musical intent through a range of conducting gestures.
The two Score Study assignments will enable the students to demonstrate their analytical and score comprehension skills, as well as their ability to plan and direct the rehearsal process.
