Course Learning Outcomes
In 2018, the course title is Wave motion.
Wave motion transfers energy from one place to another, and this impacts every facet of our day to day lives. The simple acts of seeing and hearing rely on electromagnetic and sound waves. Traffic flows in waves. Waves carry the information required for our technological society to function. Earthquake and tsunami waves can cause enormous devastation.
Wave equations are differential equations that model manifestations of wave motion. This course focusses on the underlying mathematical connections between wave equations, building on skills developed in Modelling with ODEs and PDEs & Waves. Wave equations will be derived for different wave phenomena (including traffic waves, sound waves and water waves), and wave motions will be computed using analytical and numerical methods.
Assumed knowledge: Modelling with ODEs; PDEs & Waves.
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- derive and understand several canonical mathematical models of wave phenomena;
- describe fundamental wave phenomena predicted by the mathematical models;
- use analytical methods to obtain solutions to certain models;
- use asymptotic methods in appropriate regimes to derive approximate solutions;
- employ appropriate numerical methods to solve models;
- present analyses and intepretations in written form.
