Course Code FREN 3213 Course French IIISA: Culture Coordinating Unit French Studies Term Semester 1 Level Undergraduate Location/s North Terrace Campus Units 3 Contact Up to 3 hours per week Available for Study Abroad and Exchange Y Prerequisites 12 units of French including FREN 2212 or FREN 3202 Incompatible FREN 2022 Course Description The aim of this course is to develop a deeper understanding and a critical appreciation of France's rich cultural heritage through the study of texts, films or other cultural artefacts. The course is also designed to develop language skills, with all work being conducted in French. Students completing this course will therefore benefit from enhanced reading and writing skills, as well as speaking skills and vocabulary acquisition. Course Learning OutcomesStudents who complete French IIISA Culture will be able to:
1. know the countries where French is spoken and understand their cultural productions such as literature and film
2. locate and analyse primary and secondary sources of information pertaining to the study of French culture
3. analyse with considerable sophistication cultural productions such as literature and film and be aware of the interpretative methods that can be used to deepen understanding of them.
4. work individually or in groups in collecting and organising information, and communicating arguments and ideas in clear and correct French, both written and spoken, to an academic audience.
5. develop a commitment to the rigorous application of scholarly principles in the exploration of questions and problems in relation to French society and culture.

For paper dictionaries, the French-French dictionary Le Petit Robert, and the bilingual Collins-Robert French-English English-French Dictionary are suitable because of the large number of explanations and examples they provide.

Learning & Teaching Activities
Learning & Teaching ModesThere will be three contact hours per week: a lecture that presents the topics set for study and a two-hour seminar in which students will participate in activities such as reading, textual analysis, performance, and discussion.

Specific Course Requirements
Note: to pass this course, students must complete all assessment tasks worth 20% or more.
The minimum attendance requirement that students attend at least 80% of all classes.
Students are expected to read the texts set for the given weeks in advance and prepare their answers to any set questions, as required.
It is a requirement of the course that students attend all classes. Exemption from attendance may be given by lecturers or tutors only for medical reasons or for documented cases of personal hardship. If students miss two classes without providing a satisfactory explanation (on medical or compassionate grounds), the course coordinator will ask them to explain why they should not be excluded from the course. In all cases, the onus is on students to contact their tutor or lecturer, preferably in advance, to explain their absence and to make arrangements to catch up on missed work. If this is not done, it will be assumed that the students concerned are no longer in the course.
Small Group Discovery ExperienceThe preparation of a 20-minute oral presentation in Week 12 on an aspect of the Culture topic will require students to conduct research, working in pairs.

Due to the current COVID-19 situation modified arrangements have been made to assessments to facilitate remote learning and teaching. Assessment details provided here reflect recent updates.
The assessment items and weightings have not changed. However, the mode of submission will change.
The comprehension tests on Wednesday of Week 6 will be a timed writing task. The doc word on which students write their answers will be submitted on MyUni - assignments.
The group presentation of a selected scene of a play will be done on Zoom during the week 12 seminar. Students read their piece to the class on Zoom. However, given the move from a classroom to the on-line platform, the marking criteria will change. It will consider only voice and intonation, not gestures or movements. The relative weightings will change as a result, with 20% only attributed to the reading, and 80% to the exegesis. Because Friday of Week 6 and the following Monday are public holidays, the exegesis is due on Tuesday April 14.
The analysis of the scene (short essay) will be uploaded on MyUni - Assignments. Because Friday of Week 6 and the following Monday are public holidays, the exegesis is due on Tuesday April 14.
The long essay will be submitted also on MyUni - Assignments.
Assessment Related RequirementsExtensions will only be granted on medical grounds (medical certificate required) or in documented cases of hardship. Extensions for large assignments must be requested using the MACA form available from the Faculty of Arts. It should be submitted to the Faculty before the due date of the assignment.
