Course Code EDUC 5406EX Course Online Learning Design, Assessment & Evaluation Coordinating Unit School of Education Term Semester 1 Level Postgraduate Coursework Location/s External Units 3 Contact Up to 12 hours per week wholly online Course Description This course incorporates online instructional design considerations which take into account learning styles and a constructivist, student-centred approach to higher order learning, as well as current research and development in scenario-based learning, online roleplay simulations and virtual classrooms. It also includes strategies on making assessment part of the learning process and promotion of learning through effective online assessment including collaboration, groupwork, discussion boards, exemplars and rubrics. Strategies for the evaluation of the impact of the online course design and assessment on student learning will provide a guide for design.

Course Learning OutcomesBy the time you finish this course you should be able to:
- Review and implement relevant and current resources on Instructional System Design (ISD) for Online Education
- Examine common learning theories and give an overview of their strengths and weaknesses
- Explain how learning styles should impact your teaching.
- Write Learning Outcomes for your courses
- Define the instructional design methodology of simulations, gaming and scenario-based learning and identify how you could use these models of ISD.
- Describe strategies on how to make assessment part of the learning process and increase the assessment’s effectiveness by use of interactivity, collaboration, groupwork, self and peer assessment, discussion boards and rubrics
- Construct an effective evaluation of your course design.

If you are an Adelaide University staff member and your office computer complies with the standard operating environment specs you are in a good position to meet most of the requirements, at least in terms of hardware.
Note: It is important to remember that adding new capabilities to your existing computer may have some lead time I.e forms to fill in, help desk requests, installations etc) so please set about doing this in good time.

1. Headset (mic and ear phones). Avoid using the PC speakers as these produce feedback into the mic and this disturbs other participants.

Small Group Discovery ExperienceThe course design assignment will be developed around small group discovery sessions where studetns will research their course design and share it with the class with an experienced lecturer

Assessment SummaryAssignment 1: Evaluation of Online Courses (40%),
You are required to choose an evaluation framework useful for online learning courses and use it to evaluate a LAMs course offered as part of the Graduate Certificate in Higher Education and one other course of your choice.
Due date 1: Choose your evaluation framework and report on why you have selected it (500 words, 15%)
Due date 2: Use your evaluation framework to report on a LAMS course and an online course of your choice (1500 words, 25%)
Assignment 2: Course Design Exercise (60%),
You are required to develop an online course
The course will have at least two assessments, neither of which can count for more than 70% of the overall mark
The course will be address relevant graduate attributes and will have an approprite framework for instruction, use appropriate tools and be supported by the literature.
The outcome will be the course itself and a report, in whatever format you choose, but equivalent to 2000 words describing the course and the methodologies used to develop it. (45%)
There will be substantial small group discovery time available in the virtual classrooms to assist in this assignment
