Course Code MEDIC ST 6021BHO Course Surgery Selective VI Part 2 Coordinating Unit Medicine Term Semester 2 Level Undergraduate Location/s Teaching Hospitals Units 3 Contact 4 week placement Available for Study Abroad and Exchange N Prerequisites MEDIC ST 5000 Restrictions Available to MBBS students only Course Description A Selective is a Specialist/Community or Ambulatory Placement. Each Selective is 4 weeks in duration. Students must do a Selective in Medicine, Primary Care, Psychiatry and Surgery.
Students must take at least one rural-based Selective (with the exemption of International students who are not required to do a rural placement).
Note 1: Students that have already fulfilled their 4 weeks rural total (Commonwealth requirement before graduation) may wish to apply for a rural Selective exemption.
Selective selection is from a pre-determined list of available Selectives.
Individual "once-off/self-created" Selectives may be negotiated (interstate/overseas) for student's Medicine, Surgery, Primary Care OR Psychiatry Selective. Only ONE self-created Selective may be created in Year 6. The self-created Selective must be approved by the relevant Discipline before it can be accepted.
Note 2: Some students may be required to complete a directed elective in place of their Medicine or Surgery Selective, based on decisions made at the Year 5 Board of Examiners.

The full timetable of all activities for this course can be accessed from Course Planner.Student interns need to obtain initial direction/orientation from their supervisor at the commencementof the Selective. They will provide them with an appropriate timetable including rostered on, compulsory and/or after-hour activities.

Learning & Teaching Activities
Learning & Teaching ModesThe primary mode of teaching and learning in Selectives is in the clinical context. This includes ward rounds, consultant rounds,
outpatient clinics and bedside tutorials with the student’s preceptor. Students are expected to discuss which of these are available and should be attended with their clinical preceptor.
Students are also advised to participate in academic teaching occurring at the hospital – journal clubs, unit meetings and grand rounds. Students should discuss which of these occur and which are suitable to attend

for the individual students will vary from week to week but students can assume that on average they will work a 45 hour week which will include clinic sessions, lectures (both delivered and online), seminars, tutorials and private study but does not include after-hours call.

Small Group Discovery ExperienceThe predominant learning method for the MBBS Program is small group discovery learning.

Assessment SummaryStudents are advised to read in detail the information in the Assessment Document - Part A and Part B. Studentswill be expected to be aware of the contents of these documents and to abide by the requirements as stated.Student assessment may differ according to the Selective rotation they are on. Specific assessment tasks may needto be negotiated with the supervisor.Assessment for the Selective rotations may include a case write up, critical review of a journal article, brief literature on a relevant topic or presentation to the unit, attendance and participation and global assessment of competency and professionalism.

The University places a high priority on approaches to learning and teaching that enhance the student experience. In addition, student representatives are appointed to MBBS committees and are encouraged to report on issues of importance to students.
