    4 Prepare a draft research proposal and the associated ethics submission for review.

    1 Why research? This topic introduces students to medical research on a general level.
    2 Research and ethics This topic covers research and ethics including the history of medical ethics.  Issues include:
    •    Why we have to submit research projects to an ethics committee?
    •    Ethical dilemmas and how we go about resolving them?Column cell

    4 Research proposal This topic helps to ensure students successfully formulate and submit a draft research proposal for comments. Column cell

    8 Collaborative research This topic covers ideas for a collaborative research project. This project may take many forms such as: review articles, questionnaires, collaborative clinical projects, retrospective data base reviews or innovation as related to clinical procedures or instrumentation.

    10 Final submission This topic will see students complete the appropriate ethics submission to the local ethics committee.


    Specific Course Requirements
    In order to be eligible for this program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    Professional requirements:
    •    Students must be an experienced surgeon who has completed, or be within 1 year of completing, the FRACS, FRACOG (or equivalent).
    •    Students should have a surgical fellowship or consultant position with a major interest in minimally invasive surgery.

    Visa requirements:
    •    Permanent residency or citizenship - to be a domestic applicant,
    •    or hold a Temporary Business (Long Stay) Visa (Subclass 457) – to be an International applicant.
    •    Students must be resident in Australia.

    Work placement:
    Students should have a surgical fellowship or consultant position with a major interest in minimally invasive surgery. This surgical position is not automatically offered with the Master of Minimally Invasive Surgery and students are personally responsible for obtaining a suitable position.  Job dates should coincide with the University of Adelaide quadmester dates.

    Overall assessment details:
    •    Discussion / group contribution and participation on specific issues accounts for 20% of the overall assessment.
    •    Submission of the draft research project accounts for 40% of the overall assessment.
    •    Submission to an ethics committee accounts for 40% of the overall assessment.

    Discussion of no less than 2,000 words in total on the following issues:
    •    Describe the different types of medical research and the pros and cons of each type.
    •    Discuss with your classmates ideas for a collaborative research project. This project may take many forms such as: review articles, questionnaires, collaborative clinical projects, retrospective database reviews or innovation as related to clinical procedures or instrumentation.
