Using knowledge gained in Clinical Practice I, students will gain increasing experience in the performance of minimally invasive surgical techniques. Students will learn to identify and treat problems, as well as improve their techniques by self evaluation of recorded material. They will create instructional DVDs describing operative techniques based on their work during the year.

Course Learning OutcomesOn successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1 Demonstrate proficiency in use of equipment and instrumentation used in minimally invasive surgery. 2 Identify and treat problems that arise during minimally invasive surgery. 3 Understand how to improve techniques by self-evaluation of recorded operative cases. 4 Demonstrate how to produce an instructional DVD on a minimally invasive surgery procedure. 5 Assimilate complex surgical techniques by creating an instructional DVD based on work during the year. 6 Demonstrate a range of aspects in minimally invasive surgery after attending the surgical skills workshop.

Learning & Teaching Activities
Learning & Teaching Modes
With increasing experience students will, under supervision, perform minimally invasive surgical cases. At the end of Term/Quadmester 3 students will have created an instructional DVD on a minimally invasive surgical procedure.
As with Clinical Practice I, Clinical Practice II will be delivered via the approved clinical position that each student will hold in a surgical unit of a hospital. They will be working with a clinical mentor (a surgical consultant) who will be supervising their surgical experience. The assessment of this skill acquisition will also be based on the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons' (RACS) practical logbook assessment and performance. The logbook data will be recorded to allow assessment of the experience of the student in minimally invasive surgery. Total operative experience is also required to be recorded and a formal assessment of this experience is undertaken at the completion of each six-month period by the student’s mentor.
All mentors supervising the students in their geographical locality are required to be Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) or Fellows of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RANZCOG). Students of the Master of Minimally Invasive Surgery, in their locality, will receive ongoing specialty medical training which is attained under the auspices of these Colleges and is delivered by appropriately trained and accredited Fellows. All Fellows are required to participate in their own Continuing Professional Development programs and fulfil requirements in all aspects of surgical practice including supervision of other surgeons. They are required to submit a recording of their Continuing Professional Development on an annual basis, with additional random auditing taking place each year. So whilst some mentors will not have specific University oversight, by the nature of their position all Fellows are required to fulfil the Colleges’ standards and clinical governance which will thus be enforced within the University of Adelaide and the individuals.

Specific Course RequirementsIn order to be eligible for this program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
• Students must be an experienced surgeon who has completed, or be within 1 year of completing, the FRACS, FRACOG (or equivalent).
• Students should have a surgical fellowship or consultant position with a major interest in minimally invasive surgery.
• Permanent residency or citizenship - to be a domestic applicant
• or hold a Temporary Business (Long Stay) Visa (Subclass 457) – to be an International applicant.
• Students must be a resident in Australia.
Students should have a surgical fellowship or consultant position with a major interest in minimally invasive surgery. This surgical position is not automatically offered with the Master of Minimally Invasive Surgery and students are personally responsible for obtaining a suitable position. Job dates should coincide with the University of Adelaide quadmester dates.

Assessment Related RequirementsAttendance at the Clinical Immersion workshop is compulsory.
Assessment DetailAssessment is via the student’s performance at the surgical skills weekend where they will be marked on their knowledge, dexterity on laparoscopic techniques such as manipulation, dissection and suturing, Single incision laparoscopic surgical techniques and procedures such as bowel resection, SILS cholecystectomy, fundoplication, splenectomyincisional hernia repair and intracorporeal bowel anastomosis. The tasks that require competencies to be established will be listed before the weekend such as their use of high and low fidelity surgical simulators and virtual trainers. There will also be a formal assessment of their simulation skills in a virtual operation environment at the workshop.
The student’s draft DVD progress will be formally assessed for content and innovation. The DVD should be between 5 and 15 minutes in duration and content should be a teaching or descriptive DVD based on an aspect of minimally invasive surgery. The DVD must be produced by the student. Assessment will be on topic, content, production and presentation.
Assessment will also be via the student’s logbook and ongoing supervision and assessment by their clinical mentor.
Submission• All submissions relating to tutorials will be delivered online via Colloquy’s online system.
• Examination location and date will be communicated by Program Coordinator and/or Program Administrator.
• Exam result turnaround time will be a maximum of 14 days.
