Course Code POLIS 2121 Course The Practice of Australian Politics Coordinating Unit Politics and International Studies Term Winter Level Undergraduate Location/s North Terrace Campus Units 3 Contact Up to 18 hours per week Prerequisites 12 units of Level I study Incompatible POLI 2121 Course Description This course will enable students to work on a selected number of policy case studies under the guidance of two former federal members of parliament. The focus will be on the factors that shape policy initiatives in Australia: how and why governments develop policy in the way that they do as well as on the ways that oppositions and minor parties react to these. Students will study the national and institutional context within which Australian governments operate. The course will enable students to work closely with former MPs and to utilise their unique insights into the practice of contemporary Australian politics.

Learning & Teaching Activities
Learning & Teaching ModesAs a winter school course, lectures and tutorials will be compressed into a long single session, with a mixture of lectures, interaction with guest speakesr, small group teaching and work on group assignments.

Small Group Discovery ExperienceStudents will work in groups to produce a report to a minister on a policy issue facing Australia.
