MANAGEMT 7116 - Social Enterprise

North Terrace Campus - Trimester 2 - 2014

This is a 3 unit group project course. It is the last course in the Adelaide MBA and aims to draw on all the new skills and insights that students will have developed up to this point - both technical skills like Accounting and Marketing, and more developmental experiences in Systems Thinking and Leadership. The project group will have academic supervision and aim to conceive, establish, refine or grow a social enterprise, designed to operate commercially while addressing a social problem or opportunity. The emphasis will be on systems thinking and enduring solutions, rather than short-term fixes. Students will be expected to collaborate with community stakeholders. Students will receive an intensive period of structured learning activities at the beginning of the course focusing on how knowledge and skills gained in previous courses are to be applied in the Social Enterprise project and their project in particular. This will take the form of 4 x 3 hour seminars. Through the remainder of the course, students will participate in groups, regularly meeting to conceive, establish and refine their project. Throughout this period, project groups will be supervised and receive further instruction. Additionally project groups will be required to present their progress to the supervisor and provide a rationale for the direction taken. The ongoing group work under supervision will constitute the bulk of the structured learning. Learning outcomes for the course revolve around developing the ability of students to leverage theoretical and applied skills in ambiguous situations with time and information constraints to address complex business problems and make difficult management decisions. Students will understand that cognitive biases, functional predispositions, content, and decision-making process influence the way they approach business problems and resolve them.
