PETROGEO 7012 - Basin Energy Resource Evaluation

North Terrace Campus - Semester 2 - 2022

PETROGEO 7012 brings together disciplines of geology, geophysics, reservoir engineering and decision-making to provide an integrated approach to evaluating energy resources in sedimentary basins from a business perspective. Economic evaluations provide the main source of information for an energy industry organization by which investment and operational decisions are made regarding the most effective use of resources. There are many subtleties and assumptions that underlie the apparently straight-forward economic calculations that are often seen. Consequently, a fundamental understanding of the concepts behind economic evaluation and of techniques for performing them within an energy resource context, are essential skills. Topics to be included are: energy resource industry business context, economic and business concepts, cash-flows and energy industry fiscal regimes, time-value of money, discounted cash flow, net present value and other economic metrics, case study and portfolio management. High level technical resource issues becoming increasingly important to energy resource business decisions include the distribution of geological energy plays (resource system concepts), defined prospects for CO2 disposal and hydrogen storage, identification and management of non-potable water resources for generating green hydrogen and those for harvesting geothermal energy.
