CHIN 5014 - Translation and Negotiating Cultures

North Terrace Campus - Semester 1 - 2017

This course deal with the relationship between language and culture, in particular, it addresses the question of how language and translation influence and are influenced by cross-cultural interactions in a time of unprecedented global connectivity, with special reference to translation between Chinese and English. Students will be equipped to increase cultural awareness and cultural flexibility in order to interact effectively between cultures through language and translation. It is expected that at the end of this course, students will have developed a sophisticated understanding of how translation is a shift, not between two languages, but between two cultures and will be able to negotiate and manage the cultural differences they encounter to serve a valued communicative purpose.
