General Course Information
Course Code CORPFIN 1002 Course Business Finance Coordinating Unit Business School Term Semester 2 Level Undergraduate Location/s North Terrace Campus Units 3 Contact Up to 3 hours per week Available for Study Abroad and Exchange Y Course Description This course examines firm investment and distribution decisions in the context of a capital market structure and efficiency. Valuation methods are developed for valuing projects and securities. Basic portfolio theory is discussed to develop simple asset pricing models and used for determining the cost of capital for use in investment evaluation. The implications of different financing options (debt and equity) are considered and elementary capital structure theorems are presented, in relation to which the dividend decisions are analysed. The question of market efficiency is considered and its implications for trading strategies are discussed.

1. Compute complex time value of money calculations.

Learning & Teaching ModesThis course will be delivered via a 2-hour lecture session and a 1-hour problem-solving tutorial sessions. Lectures provide students with a primary understanding and tutorials help enhance skills to put prior learning into practice. It is important that students spend time solving questions provided prior to attending tutorials.
The information below is provided as a guide to assist students in engaging appropriately with the course requirements.Students in this course are expected to attend and prepare for all topics prior to the scheduled class. As a guide, students are expected to spend 9 hours each week for this course (this includes face-to-face contact, online components, and self-directed study).

Assessment Related Requirements
Assessment DetailThis course has two class tests and one final exam. The tests and final exam will be open book and run online. More information will be provided in the first lecture.
SubmissionAssignment reports should be submitted electronically. The link for the Turnitin Assignment tool has been created for you under the Assignment page entitled “ Assignment Submission” in the MyUni site.
You can upload your assignment directly by following the prompts. For guidance on how to submit your assignment electronically via MyUni Canvas, go to http://www.adelaide.edu.au/myuni/tutorials/ and click on the “Submit an Assignment” tutorial. You will need to upload a Word or pdf version of your assignment to Turnitin.
Students must retain a copy of all assignments submitted.

Communication Skills Guide will have been given to you at the beginning of your program. This guide will assist you structure your assignments. In preparing any written piece of assessment for your undergraduate studies it is important to draw on the relevant ‘literature’ to support critical analysis. Also essential is to reference the literature used. Correct referencing is important because it identifies the source of the ideas and arguments that you present, and sometimes the source of the actual words you use, and helps to avoid the problem of plagiarism. (Further information on plagiarism is provided later in this course outline.)
The Harvard system is widely used in the Business School. Guidelines for the use of this style of referencing can be found in the Communication Skills Guide. Late Assignment Submission
Students are expected to submit their work by the due date to maintain a fair and equitable system. Extensions will generally only be given for medical or other serious reasons. All requests for extensions must be emailed to the lecturer in charge of the course before the due date. Each request will be assessed on its merits.
A late assignment (without prior arrangement) will be penalised by a reduction of 1 mark or 5% of the possible maximum mark applicable for the assignment for each day that it is late.
Return of Assignments
Lecturer aims to mark and return assignments to students within three (3) weeks of the due date with written feedback.
Grades for your performance in this course will be awarded in accordance with the following scheme:
