EDUC 7420 - English Language Teaching in Practice

North Terrace Campus - Semester 2 - 2024

This course is designed to prepare students to plan, implement and evaluate English language curriculum and syllabus in a range of ELT situations. Students will be encouraged to critically analyse learners? needs and teaching resources to develop language teaching materials and lesson plans as part of a Teaching Practice program with volunteer students. Students will critically reflect on their own teaching practice and further develop their analytical and reflective skills by observing other teachers in practice to explore the relationship between theory and practice.

    Assessment Detail

    Assignment 1 – literature review 

    In this assignment you will analyse learners’ needs in order to plan and teach lessons and critically reflect on teaching practice.  This assignment will strengthen your knowledge of literature on the chosen topic and assist you in supporting your work. It also aims to increase your awareness of the main researchers in the areas and provides a starting point in evaluating the ideas of this research.

     Assignment 2 – research essay

    In this assignment you will analyse learners’ needs in order to plan and teach lessons and critically reflect on teaching practice.  This assignment will demonstrate your ability to critically reflect on teaching practice, observations and feedback, making reference to learner needs, reading and research in the specific area.

     Assignment 3 - online discussion forum

    There are 5 discussion posts in this course, 4 are assessed (Weeks 3, 4, 8, 11). Your participation in the online discussion forums will be assessed and is weighted at 20% of your overall grade. All posts are based on a discussion point or set focus point, and often ask you to reflect on your prior experience and make connections to the topics and readings.

    Submission
    You must submit an assessment task in accordance with the specified deadline, format and lodgement instructions, except as provided in the Modified Arrangements for Coursework Assessment Policy. All submissions will be via the LMS. Specific information will be provided in the Assessment instructions for each item online. Students will be required to upload all written Assignment via Internet-based plagiarism detection service turnitin on the LMS.
