Learning & Teaching ModesThe Dean’s elective provides an opportunity for students to experience healthcare provision in a different setting or to work in a speciality or sub-speciality in which they have a particular interest.
The information below is provided as a guide to assist students in engaging appropriately with the course requirements.Year 6 students are required to undertake a 4 week Dean’s elective. There is 4 weeks allocated during the selective semester for the Dean’s elective, but students may (with prior approval from the Course Coordinator) arrange to complete the Dean’s elective during the break between Year 5 and Year 6 or during the mid-semester break. The Dean’s elective cannot be undertaken at the end of Year 6 as this time may be needed for remedial placements.

Specific Course RequirementsThe aim of the Dean’s elective is to allow you the greatest flexibility in selecting an experience that will meet your particular needs and interests. The Dean’s elective provides an opportunity for you to undertake a clinical placement of your choice in an institution of your choosing. Many students undertake their electives overseas; some take placements in other parts of Australia whilst a few students work in South Australia itself.

To complete Year 6 students must successfully complete the 2 hurdle assessments as per below and have successfully completed all year level component course placements (24 units).

Academic Progression Requirements
To pass this course and the Final (Sixth Year) MBBS Assessment Part 2 course, students must obtain:
• a satisfactory result in the assessment components in semesters 1 and 2
If a student fails one course or placement, they must undertake a remedial course or placement and must obtain a pass.
If a student fails two courses or placements, they will fail the year and must repeat the entire year.
Assessment Related RequirementsProfessional Requirements
All medical students are registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Medical Board of Australia. The staff of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences manage student registration by providing a list of enrolled medical students to the AHPRA. Students do not need to register individually.

The University of Adelaide has developed a Code of Conduct in consultation with the Medical Board of Australia to guide students and clarify expectations of student conduct on a range of issues and in various situations. The Code of Conduct is found in the canvas course associated with this course.
All courses in the MBBS program have attendance requirements that are clearly outlined in the respective Course Outlines.
QuizThe code of conduct quiz is a hurdle requirement
Students are required to complete a two page report (about 1200 words) reflecting on how this elective has contributed to their learning. These reports may be made available to subsequent year groups to inform them about what host institutions have to offer our students. Students do have the option to ask for their report not to be made available to other students.
You are required to submit a certificate of completion form, signed by the supervisor of your Dean’s elective placement. Supervisors will be contacted to confirm that students completed their elective satisfactorily and that there were no issues or concerns.
To graduate a student must have achieved a NGP in 24 units of the clinical placement courses and have completed both hurdle requirements as per above.
If a student has not completed all required units of the year they must successfully complete an appropriate remedial course of the same or greater value as specified in term 4 of the same academic year prior to graduation.
