CHEM ENG 7108 - Quantum Materials

North Terrace Campus - Semester 1 - 2022

This course develops concepts in quantum mechanics such that the behaviour of the physical universe can be understood from a fundamental point of view. It provides a basis for further study of quantum mechanics. Content will include: quantum mechanics, introduction of the Schrodinger equation, operators, eigenfunctions, infinite well in one and three dimensions, degeneracy; Band theory based on simple arguments; periodic structures, energy and momentum, Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics, population density, k-space, one and 3 dimensional crystals, Brillouin zones, band-gap engineering, quantum wells; electronic structure, atomic order. On successful completion of this course students will be able to: - Demonstrate knowledge of quantum mechanics in relation to crystal materials; - Demonstrate knowledge in quantum materials, such as semiconductor devices; - Show an understanding of wave mechanics in one and three dimensions; - Understand the purely quantum mechanical idea of spin, and how to represent and visualize it. - Apply knowledge to design new semiconductor materials.
