CHEM ENG 7108 - Quantum Materials

This course develops concepts in quantum mechanics such that the behaviour of the physical universe can be understood from a fundamental point of view. It provides a basis for further study of materials for which the laws of quantum mechanics are needed to explain their observed behaviours. Content will include but is not limited to; Failures of classical theories; Introduction to quantum mechanics; Introduction of the Schrodinger equation, operators, eigenfunctions, infinite well in one and three dimensions, degeneracy; Sommerfeld Quantum theory of free electrons; Lattice Periodicity and crystals; Reciprocal Lattice and Fourier Series; Diffraction and scattering in a solid; The Physics of Phonons; Bloch theorem and the structure of the energetic bands in a solid; Energy and momentum; Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics, population density, k-space, one and 3-dimensional crystals; Brillouin zones, band-gap engineering, quantum wells; electronic structure, atomic order; Introduction to quantum magnetism: Diamagnetism, Paramagnetism & Ferromagnetism. Magnetic ordering, Anisotropy & domains, Exchange interaction; Intro to Superconductivity and to the physics of the Josephson Effect. On successful completion of this course students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of quantum mechanics in relation to crystal materials. 2. Show an understanding of wave mechanics in one and three dimensions. 3. Understand the purely quantum mechanical idea of spin, and how to represent and visualize it. 4. Understand the basic properties of systems made of periodic arrays of atoms. 5. Understand the basic properties of quantum magnetism. 6. Demonstrate some initial knowledge in exotic quantum materials, such as superconducting materials.
