Course Details
Course Code MATHS 7027 Course Mathematical Foundations of Data Science Coordinating Unit School of Mathematical Sciences Term Semester 2 Level Postgraduate Coursework Location/s North Terrace Campus Units 3 Contact Up to 5 hours per week Available for Study Abroad and Exchange Y Course Description This course introduces fundamental mathematical concepts relevant to computer science and provides a basis for further postgraduate study in data science, statistical machine learning, and cybersecurity. Topics covered are probability: sets, counting, probability axioms, Bayes theorem; optimisation and calculus: differentiation, integration, functions of several variables, series approximations; linear algebra: vector and matrices, matrix algebra, vector spaces; discrete mathematics and statistics: linear regression, linear least squares, regularisation. Applications of the theory to data science and machine learning will be developed. Course Staff

Assessment Summary
Written Assignments: 20% total (5 x 4% each)
Tutorial & Workshop Participation: 10% total (11 x weekly workshop written quizzes + 6 x tutorials)
Final Exam: 70% totalAssessment Related Requirements
An aggregate score of 50% is required to pass the course. Furthermore students must achieve at least 45% on the final examination to pass the course.Assessment Detail
Written assignments are due every fortnight, the first is due in Week 3.
Workshops (including a short written quiz) will be weekly, starting in Week 2.
Tutorials are fortnightly beginning in Week 2.

Late assignments will not be accepted without a medical certificate.
Written assignments will have a one week turnaround time for feedback to students.
