  • Research Interests

Improving South Australian State Fire Mapping and Monitoring using AusCover Products

    • Developing, demonstrating and evaluating new methods for mapping and monitoring fire, particularly for more regional areas and outback areas of South Australia for the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR). This project used two of the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) AusCover data products: 'Seasonal fractional cover - Landsat, JRSRP algorithm, Australia coverage' to extract burnt area; and 'Burnt area and approximate day of burn - MODIS' for comparison and dating purposes.

Wombats as a Model for Evidence-Based Management of Native Fauna

    • This ARC Linkage project aims to use the Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat as a model species to evaluate ecological models for evidence-based continental and site-specific management of native fauna.

Application of Remote Sensing for Reservoir Reserve Monitoring

    • A detailed literature review of the remote sensing platforms, sensors, tools and techniques available for identifying and monitoring weeds and post-fire erosion in SA Water's reservoir reserves.

Remote Sensing of Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems in the Western Lake Eyre Basin (LEB)

    • The GDE index uses MODIS imagery to identify and map on a pixel basis riparian areas that remain green into prolonged dry periods and are most likely to be associated with groundwater availability. This work supports the broader “Ecosystems Dependent on Shallow Groundwater Systems in the Western Rivers (LEB)” project for the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR).

Mapping Areas of Dieback in the Fleurieu Peninsula Swamps

    • Using Landsat NDVI short-term and long-term trend analysis to identify areas of dieback in the Fleurieu Peninsula Swamps for the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR).

Mapping Areas of Diffuse Discharge in the Great Artesian Basin

    • Developing a method for mapping and quantifying areas of Great Artesian Basin (GAB) diffuse discharge from Landsat imagery for the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR). The methodology maps the areas of high albedo (from the evaporate minerals) and cooler surface temperatures, which are indicative of near-surface wet soil.

Developing Ecological Response Models and Determining Water Requirements for Wetlands in the South-East of South Australia

    • A Goyder Institute project in partnership with The University of Adelaide, the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) and the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR).

    AMLR NRM Re-vegetation Project

    • Scoping the monitoring of woody-perennial vegetation clearance and re-vegetation with Landsat remote sensing in the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Region.

    SAAL NRM Land Condition Project

    • Developing Landsat remote sensing tools and spatial analysis to provide an assessment of broad scale land and ecological condition in the pastoral lands of the Gawler Bioregion for the South Australian Arid Lands (SAAL) Natural Resource Management (NRM) Board.

    Jobs Fund Scheme, Northern Kimberley

    • Designing and developing an airborne imaging system for high resolution photography, using aerial photography collected at strategic broad-scale transects as part of a Jobs Fund project protecting biodiversity on Northern Kimberley pastoral leases to achieve broad scale conservation and social outcomes, in partnership between Conservation Ark, The University of Adelaide and Doongan and Theda pastoral leases.

    Landscape Futures Program

    • Technical report writing for the Landscape Futures Analysis Tool, developed by the University of Adelaide and the CSIRO, in collaboration with regional Natural Resource Management (NRM) bodies, for ‘climate-ready’ planning for biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration, weed management and agricultural production.

     Wombat Research

    • Revision of report and journal papers for publication

     Cardiac ARIA

    • Prior to my current position I was employed as a Research Associate by GISCA, Australian Institute for Social Research, at The University of Adelaide. Here, I worked on an ARC funded project. Developing a new geographical index, based on the Accessibility and Remoteness Index of Australia (ARIA), classifying each of Australia’s urban, rural and remote population centres, in order to identify geographic ‘hotspots’ where there is likely to be a mismatch between demand for, and the provision of, cardiac services.

Fire Regimes in Arid and Semi-Arid Australia

    • PhD research providing an objective, continental and regional perspective on fire regimes across arid and semi-arid Australia for the period 1998–2004, using fire data derived from NOAA/AVHRR satellite imagery and a comprehensive spatial and temporal database of factors (climatic, edaphic and anthropogenic) influencing fire regime.
