  • Biography/ Background

Hayden Tronnolone commenced a Bachelor of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Adelaide in 2007 thanks to a last-minute reshuffle of his SATAC preferences (and a love of mathematics). In 2009 he discovered that you could get something called a "major", and went on to graduate later that year with majors in applied and pure mathematics. Buoyed by this achievement, Hayden undertook his honours degree in Mathematical Sciences in applied mathematics the following year under the supervision of Dr. Yvonne Stokes. Focusing on fluid mechanics, he completed a thesis entitled "Fluid flow in helical channels" and graduated from honours due to a clerical error.

Seeking a change of pace, Hayden commenced his PhD at the University of Adelaide in 2011 under the supervision of Dr. Yvonne Stokes, Dr. Matt Finn (both from the University of Adelaide) and Prof Darren Crowdy (from Imperial College London). He eventually did manage a true change of pace, at least from a mechanics perspective, with his thesis focusing on the slow fluid flows that arise during the fabrication of microstructured optical fibres. Due to the wide public interest in this project and the inevitable excitement its completion will create, this work is being funded by an Australian Postgraduate Award.

In-between working very hard on his thesis, Hayden has found time to speak at the 2011 ANZIAM conference, co-organise a symposium, tutor, give some fun presentations, co-create the theory of non-functions, find the distance between two spheres in two different ways, send coded messages across the postgraduate office, and volunteer at Open Day.
