Dr Jennie Fluin

Dr. Fluin has been an active researcher in the field of applied palaeoecology for the past ten years. Fluin’s work has been published in leading journals including Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of Applied Ecology and Journal of Paleolimnology. Fluin’s research has focussed on recent (last 2000 years) ecological change to the lower Murray River wetlands, including the Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth. She has developed expertise in several indicators including diatoms, aquatic plant macrofossils, pigments, and stable isotopes. A pioneering outcome of this research has been the development of a flooding/drought model for the lower Murray region. This model allows researchers to reconstruct cycles of wetting and drying over thousands of years. It is likely that this model will have applications for developing new federal and state government water resource management strategies for the Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth. Fluin’s work on high resolution aquatic plant macrofossil analysis is innovative and valuable. It allows researchers to reconstruct aquatic flora over time and correlate these fluctuations with water quality and quantity changes. This means that, for the first time, researchers can document the responses of aquatic plants to climate on long timescales. Fluin is a senior Research Associate in the palaeoecological research group at the University of Adelaide and currently supervises four PhD students.
Jennie has a BA (Hons) from Adelaide University and a PhD from Monash University (2002).
