  • Biography/ Background

    Keith Wilson is Senior International Trade Law Counsellor at IIT. He was the inaugural IIT Visiting Fellow to the WTO in 2015-2016 and later served as Acting IIT Executive Director. Keith has expertise in fields of public international law including international trade and investment, security and disarmament, air and space law, humanitarian and human rights law, international dispute resolution and development assistance. A graduate of the University of Adelaide and Leiden University, the Netherlands, he was admitted to the Supreme Court of South Australia in 1986.

    Keith has worked as a government and private sector lawyer, tertiary educator, international development consultant, and political affairs officer and Head of Government Relations of the Hague-based Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013. He was previously involved in treaty negotiations on international trade, investment, transport and e-commerce agreements, and has been national legal adviser on committees of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). He currently serves on the South Australian Divisional Advisory Board of the Red Cross.

    Keith has taught in business, law and security programs for Australian and European universities, and has delivered training, capacity-building and technical assistance on trade policy and negotiation and a range of legal and regulatory issues in more than 40 countries in regions including Africa, Asia, Central America and the Caribbean, and the Pacific Islands. His research interests include trade in services, investment, international dispute resolution, trade and security, trade and innovation, digital trade and e-commerce.
