The University of Adelaide ranked 106 in the 2021 QS World University Rankings.
Adelaide is the only university in South Australia ranked inside the top 250. Published annually, the QS World University Rankings provides an index of the world’s leading higher education institutions based on six performance indicators. The ranking features 1,011 universities in 85 countries.

Adelaide ranked 118 in the 2021 Times Higher Education world university rankings.
The Times Higher Education world university rankings lists the best global universities as judged across all of their core missions – teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook.
152 in Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU)
The University of Adelaide ranked 152 in the 2020 ARWU (Shanghai Jiao Tong).
Universities are ranked by several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution.

The University of Adelaide has cemented its position as one of the leading universities in Australia, with 14 subject areas ranked in the global top 100 of the 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
These subjects include:

- Dentistry and Oral Sciences
- Mining and Mineral Engineering
- Computer Science & Engineering
- Instruments Science Technology
- Automation and Control
- Civil Engineering
- Water Resources
- Agricultural Sciences
- Earth Sciences
- Mechanical Engineering
- Veterinary Sciences
- Energy Science and Engineering
From this list, we were the top ranked South Australian University in 12 subjects. We are also Australia’s #1 University for Dentistry and Electrical Engineering.
Globally, we ranked in the Top 10 for Mining and Mineral Engineering (7th) and in the Top 50 for another seven subject areas: Electrical – Electronic Engineering (42nd), Dentistry and Oral Sciences (45th), Computer Science & Engineering (40th), Automation and Control (24th), Civil Engineering (25th), Water Resources (31st), and Agricultural Sciences (37th).
These rankings underpin the digital ecosystem we are creating as part of the Lot 14 redevelopment.

Top 100 in 16 academic subjects measured by 2019 QS World University Rankings
The University of Adelaide ranked in the top 100 in the world by QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019 for 15 academic subjects:
- Mineral and mining engineering
- Veterinary science
- Engineering - Civil and Structural
- Engineering - Chemical
- Agriculture and forestry
- Anatomy and physiology
- Earth and marine sciences
- Environmental sciences
- Accounting and finance
In four of those fields we are in the world top 50: mineral and mining engineering (26th in the world), dentistry (31st), nursing (42nd), veterinary science (43rd).
In a further 10 fields we are just outside the top 100: architecture, computer science and information systems, economics and econometrics, electrical and electronic engineering, biological sciences, psychology, mathematics, physics and astronomy, English languages and literature and education.
In total we have 26 academic fields ranked in the top 150 in the world.

The latest Leiden Rankings - founded on analysis of influential research publications rated amongst the top 1% and top 10% in their fields - ranked the University of Adelaide 6th in Australia and New Zealand and 139th in the world for overall research performance, out of almost 1000 institutions globally.
