Adrian’s research interests have been in endothelial dysfunction and inflammation in cardiovascular disease. His PhD was on the modification of low-density lipoproteins (e.g. ‘bad cholesterol’) by oxidants during vascular inflammation. This research project gave Adrian diverse experience in a variety of biochemical techniques, looking at gene and protein regulation to free radical and protein chemistry.
Currently, our research is investigating the role of zinc alterations in vascular protection against cigarette smoke and cardiovascular disease. We have shown that Zn modulates endothelial cell nitric oxide (artery dilator) production and endothelin-1 (artery constrictor) release independently of each other.
