  • Biography/ Background

Dr Alfonso Chinnici is a Research Fellow in the School of Mechanical Engineering at The University of Adelaide and a member of the Centre for Energy Technology from the same university. He received a Bachelor’s Degree, a Master’s Degree and a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Naples, Italy. Prior to his appointment with the University of Adelaide in 2014, he was a fellow of the Combustion Institute Research of Italy.

His current research interests include renewable energy, solar thermal energy, combustion science of fossil and alternative fuels, computational fluid dynamic, hybrid solar systems, development/demonstration of clean energy technologies, reactor design, heat/mass transfer, aerodynamic, and multi-phase flows.

Currently, he is the research leader of two clean energy technology development programs at the University of Adelaide and co-leader of the MILD Combustion program. Recent achievements of Dr Chinnici include the first world-wide demonstration of the solar hybrid receiver combustor technology employing fossil and renewable fuels, the development of a novel solar vortex particle receiver/reactor, and the efficient use of agricultural residues under MILD combustion regime. He is also part of the Australian Solar Thermal Research Initiative (node P1.2 – receiver performance) and of an ARENA funded project which aims to add concentrated solar thermal energy to the Bayer Alumina process.

He has published widely in the above fields, jointly authoring >50 papers in international journals and peer reviewed conferences, and regularly presented his research findings to international audiences. His publications on technology also include 1 international patent and 2 technical reports. He serves as a regular reviewer for numerous international journals and conferences, including Applied Energy, Physics of Fluids, Solar Energy, Proceedings of the Combustion Institute, Energies, Fuel, SolarPACES, Asia-Pacific Conference on Combustion, and Australasian Fluid-Mechanic Conference. He is also a member of the International Committee of the International Conference on Sustainability in Energy and Buildings.

He also works widely with industries including power/heat generation, solar thermal energy, and aerospace, as well as international research institutions. In addition to his research work, Dr Chinnici serves as supervisors for undergraduate students, master and PhD candidates, as well as Guest Lecture for CFD, renewable energy, and combustion technology courses at the University of Adelaide.

He is a member of the Australian and New Zeeland Section of the Combustion Institute, and of the American Chemical Society.
