  • Biography/ Background

    Dr Claire Jones

NHMRC Early Career Research Fellow, School of Medicine, University of Adelaide

Centre for Orthopaedic & Trauma Research, School of Medicine, University of Adelaide

Senior Biomedical Engineer, Adelaide Centre for Spinal Research (ACSR), SA Pathology

Adjunct Lecturer, School of Mechanical Engineering, University of Adelaide

Adjunct Senior Lecturer, School of Health Sciences, University of South Australia

Using a variety of in vitro and in vivo laboratory techniques and medical imaging modalities, Dr Jones studies the biomechanics of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems in normal, diseased and injured states. A better understanding of such biomechanics contributes to improved disease and injury prevention strategies, diagnostic tests and conservative and surgical treatments. Dr Jones' research primarily focuses on orthopaedic and injury biomechanics of the spine and spinal cord, as well as upper and lower limb biomechanics and associated orthopaedic devices. She has expertise in the development of novel large animal and cadaver models for biomechanics research.

The biomechanics laboratory at the ACSR is equipped with an Instron 6-axis material testing machine, Optotrak Certus motion capture system, High speed camera system, National Instruments signal conditioning and data acquisition system, Gaeltec needle pressure transducers, Wacom tablet monitor, digital x-ray and cadaver preparation facilities. Through collaborations within SA Pathology and Royal Adelaide Hospital, the Centre also has access to microCT, DEXA, and clinical imaging facilities, a biaxial materials testing machine and animal facilities.

The laboratory has active collaborations with researchers and clinicians from the Royal Adelaide and Modbury Hospitals, University of Adelaide School of Mechanical Engineering, School of Paediatrics and Reproductive Health and Discipline of Orthopaedics & Trauma, UniSA, Flinders University, and the University of British Columbia.

BEFORE you contact me, please read the following.

Academic  research will require you to think, synthesise, design, experiment, and write. Your skills in these areas will be developed during individual and group research meetings, for which you will need to be prepared and on time.  My expectation is that you will have good technical engineering skills, and an ability to apply these meticulously and rigorously. You must be keen to learn and improve if you are lacking skills required for your research. I will put in what you put in: if you work hard, I will work hard to assist you; the reverse will also apply.

If you are an International student requiring a scholarship to support living expenses, please review the closing dates for the scholarship and admission rounds on the University website. Please note that scholarships are extremely competitive.

If you are a Domestic (Australian) student, please review the closing dates for the Australian Research Training Program awards (previously named Australian Postgraduate Award) on the University website.

If you are interested in pursuing a PhD, Masters/honours under my supervision, contact me by email and include:

    • your CV (including the Universities/schools you have attended, past jobs, details of any publications etc)
    • your transcripts, in English (either a copy or a listing of your grades, not the official transcript)
    • a topic, or experimental technique, that you find of interest
