The Don Dunstan Foundation presents Professor Marcia Langton to deliver the annual Lowitja O'Donoghue Oration "Freedom Songs: the unfinished business of the 1967 Referendum".
Join us to hear Professor Langton discussing why the provision in the legislation that enables the Commonwealth to discriminate against people on the basis of race should be removed from the Constitution. The 1967 referendum result failed to fully enfranchise indigenous Australians as it did not remove Section 25 of the Constitution; there is unfinished business. She believes the Canadian Constitution, along with Noel Pearson's proposal for including an Indigenous consultative body in the Parliament to review legislation, offer possible ways of incorporating first nation people into the state. Prof Langton acknowledges the importance of the current Recognise campaign.
"She floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee and she terrifies people who have to face her in debate. Especially politicians. She can shift from ex cathedra to street-fighter mode in the blink of an eye".
