An innovative international online music journal, which will provide free access to scholarly research articles as well as music and video clips, will be launched at the University of Adelaide tomorrow (Thursday 30 April).

The Journal of Music Research Online (JMRO), an initiative of the Music Council of Australia, has been established with funding from the University of Adelaide and Griffith University.

JMRO will be a peer-reviewed journal for the publication of research in music, with an editorial team of internationally known music researchers.

"JMRO is an opportunity to disseminate high quality research to the whole world while working with internationally renowned academics. It will assist researchers and students of music who will have access to the latest research," said Dr Sylvan Elhay, Editor of JMRO and Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Adelaide's School of Computer Science.

JMRO will cover a wide range of areas in music, such as composition, music education and interdisciplinary studies in music. It will also include high quality images, audio and video samples as well as music scores.

"The University of Adelaide encourages the use of technology to research different areas of music. For example, some articles in JMRO will allow people to look at written music and listen to the piece. It will enhance the understanding of new research while making it more accessible," said Dr Elhay.

The launch will also celebrate the publication of JMRO's first article, 'Jangling in symmetrical sounds: Maurice Ravel as storyteller and poet', by Emily Kilpatrick, a PhD graduate from the University of Adelaide.

JMRO will be launched at the University of Adelaide at 8.00am on Thursday 30 April.
