General Practice secures new Fellowship

Wednesday, 5 March 2003

The University of Adelaide's Department of General Practice and the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, has secured $1.5 million permanent funding to establish a Research Fellowship to continue the work of the Gunn Research Foundation.

The Foundation was established from the estates and in memory of Mr Jack Heath Gunn and Mrs Jean Dempsey Gunn. The Foundation has bequeathed the funding to the University.

Professor Justin Beilby, Head of the Department of General Practice, said his department would be creating a Fellowship with the funds.

"The Fellowship would be advertised annually and be awarded to researchers who want to work in the areas of joint disease, general paediatrics, palliative care, primary community health care and/or community mental health including psycho-geriatrics," he said.

"We are excited by the chance to manage this research fellowship on an on-going basis. It fits appropriately with the strategic direction of the department in terms of fostering and establishing research in General Practice in South Australia.

"At the moment we are strengthening our research and development stream in the department and this fellowship would be part of the mix.

"We envisage that the availability of the Gunn Fellowship would provide an exciting opportunity for researchers to come from interstate or overseas to work in the Department, as well as offering a new avenue of research employment for post-doctoral graduates," Professor Beilby said.
