Renewed focus in fight against men's cancer
Friday, 28 September 2012
Some of the State's top cancer experts have joined forces to battle one of the biggest cancer killers of men in Australia - prostate cancer.
Announced during International Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, the new SA Prostate Cancer Research Collaborative will boost the level of high-calibre research being conducted in this State into the deadly disease.
The collaborative was initiated by the Freemasons Foundation Centre for Men's Health to provide a greater focus for research efforts in the State.
It brings together prostate cancer researchers and clinicians from the University of Adelaide, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Repatriation General Hospital, University of South Australia, South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), Flinders University, Royal Adelaide Hospital, Ashford Cancer Centre and others.
"Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia, with about 20,000 men diagnosed annually," says the Director of the Freemasons Foundation Centre for Men's Health, University of Adelaide Professor of Medicine Gary Wittert.
"Anything we can do to combat this disease, which kills more than 3000 Australian men each year, will be of great benefit to our community," Professor Wittert says.
The group will start with a symposium on Friday 5 October to discuss the latest developments in prostate cancer research.
The event will be officially opened by Health Minister the Hon. John Hill, with the opening address to be given by Professor Steve Wesselingh, Executive Director of SAHMRI.
