Law students travel north for Winter School

Friday, 17 July 2015

Third and final-year law students are travelling to the State’s Far North to see firsthand case studies to support their environmental law studies and to build awareness of Indigenous culture.

As part of the University of Adelaide’s Winter School, which runs in the break between semesters, the students are taking an eight-day ‘Biodiversity, Planning and Regional Study Tour’ of areas including Port Augusta, the Arid Recovery Reserve (north of Roxby Downs), Olympic Dam, the Iga Warta Indigenous Cultural Centre and the Flinders Ranges National Park.

This is the first time the study tour has been run as a formal course for credit within the law program. The tour departs on Monday 20 July and returns on Monday 27 July.

“This study tour gives students a chance to gain direct knowledge and greater understanding about some of the issues that may arise in their future careers,” says study tour leader Mr Paul Leadbeter, Senior Lecturer in the University’s Adelaide Law School.

“Some of these students will not have been to Port Augusta, never mind to these Outback regions. Being able to experience it first hand really shows them what the environment is like and what the issues are.

“The Arid Recovery Reserve, for instance, is a great example of an initiative that is helping Australia meet its obligations under the International Convention on Biological Diversity. They will also get their hands dirty doing some volunteer work in the reserve, possible removing weeds or helping repair fences.

“And the students will have the opportunity to experience some Adnyamathanha culture, and be able to compare Indigenous environmental laws and codes with non-Indigenous practice.”

The Study Tour is one of 95 undergraduate and postgraduate intensive courses being offered in Winter School 2015, taken up this year by 1600 students.

Winter School gives students the opportunity to fit an extra subject into the academic year and take courses that might not otherwise be available to them. It is also open to members of the community wishing to study for personal development.

Students undertake intensive study over a short period, followed by exams or other assessment.
