New food degree puts jobs on the menu

Monday, 7 November 2005

A new University of Adelaide degree offered in conjunction with TAFE SA's Regency Campus will give South Australian food science students an even better opportunity for a food industry career.

Launched today, the Bachelor of Food Science and Technology is a three-year degree (with an option of a fourth-year of Honours) which takes the place of the four-year Bachelor of Food Technology and Management. For the degree, students receive world-class science training from the University of Adelaide's Faculty of Sciences and industry-focused food technology learning from TAFE.

Degree coordinator Dr Carolyn Schultz says the degree gives its graduates expertise that is in demand from the food industry.

"We are teaching students material that has direct relevance to the food industry, so the majority of our graduates go on to employment with major local, national and international food processors, like Arnott's and Bickford's," she says. "And some of the graduates are in positions which have a real impact on the direction of the industry.

"It's also a lot of fun - students have the opportunity to make food products like sausages and cheese using equipment at Regency."

One such recent Food Science graduate who is making an impact is Bridget Sara, who works as a Food Industry Development Officer at the Yorke Regional Development Board.

She says that the degree equipped them with the skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in the food industry.

"The degree is very diverse, you are always learning something new that is relevant to the Food Industry, as well as being of general interest," she says.

"I found the Honours project to be very valuable, it provided me with time management and project management skills and allowed me to interact with people in the Food Industry while still studying.

"A number of the students that I studied with are now working with the company where they did their Honours project."
