A University of Adelaide book focused on South Australia's growing links with the Asia-Pacific region has been launched today by the SA Premier, the Hon. Jay Weatherill.

The Engaging State, edited by Professor Purnendra Jain and Associate Professor John Spoehr, looks at the economic, political, social and cultural relationship between South Australia and key Asian countries, particularly China, India and Japan.

"This is a book for its time," Professor Jain says. "It demonstrates just how important the Asia-Pacific region has become to our State, from many different perspectives."

"Chinese and Indian investment in South Australia - particularly in the mining sector - is growing, and education is also one of our biggest exports.

"Another human flow has much deeper and longer-lasting impact: the phenomenal growth of migration from Asia."

A number of University of Adelaide academics from different disciplines have contributed to the book, including demographer Professor Graeme Hugo AO, Associate Professor Barry Burgan from the University's Business School and Dr Glen Stafford from the University's Confucius Institute.

Premier Weatherill launched the book at 2.30pm today at the University of Adelaide's North Terrace Campus.

"Since taking office in October 2011, the Premier has vindicated the importance of this book through his international engagements," Professor Jain says.

"He has moved quickly to recognise the importance of our relationship with India and also strengthened South Australia's economic and other multi-layered linkages with the United States. It shows a clear commitment of his new State Government to further deepen South Australia's engagement with the Asia-Pacific."
