I Want to Attend a Ceremony

Our presentation ceremonies are held in in April/May and September in Bonython Hall at the North Terrace Campus.

Graduates are eligible to apply to attend a graduation ceremony that is held within 12 months of the date of conferral of their award. After 12 months, your only option to receive your testamur is In Absentia.

The video and information below contain a useful guide to the steps that you will need to take if you are attending a ceremony.

  • Step 1: check your ceremony attendance confirmation letter

Once the ceremony schedule has been finalised by the Graduations Office, you will be issued with a Ceremony Attendance Confirmation Letter in Access Adelaide. Once released, the letter can be found under Graduations > Status.

This letter will contain the date and time of your ceremony, as well as other important information that you need to be aware of.

If you are receiving more than one award, you will receive both of these at the same ceremony - the Graduations Office will assign you to the ceremony for the award considered to be the highest. You will receive a Ceremony Attendance Confirmation Letter for each award, stating the ceremony that you have been assigned to.

  • Step 2: apply for additional guest tickets

Graduates are each allocated two tickets for guests to attend their graduation ceremony. Instructions to print guest tickets will be available in your Ceremony Attendance Confirmation Letter.

If you would like to apply for additional guest tickets, you may do so in your Access Adelaide account while applications for additional tickets are open. You can find the application deadlines for the upcoming ceremony round on the important deadlines page. As high volumes of additional ticket requests are received, late applications cannot be accepted.

Please be aware that additional tickets are not guaranteed due to the limited space in Bonython Hall. If additional tickets are available, they will be issued equitably among the graduates who have submitted a request for additional tickets by the deadline. If you are successful in receiving additional tickets, you will be advised via your student email.

We recommend that guests do not book flights or accommodation until the final ticket allocation has been confirmed in Access Adelaide. The University does not take any responsibility for refunding any such bookings in the case that additional tickets are not available.

Any guests without tickets for entry into Bonython Hall are welcome to view the live stream of the ceremony on level 5 of Hub Central (Mezzanine level) - refer to map below.

  • Step 3: order your academic dress

All graduates attending the ceremony are required to wear the appropriate academic dress - gown with a hood and mortar board/bonnet. We recommend wearing neat, formal attire and appropriate shoes with your gown.

Academic dress can be hired or purchased from GFP Graduations. Students are encouraged to obtain their academic dress from GFP Graduations, who are the Universities preferred supplier. The University does not recommend Academic Dress sourced from other providers as the Academic Dress provided may not be consistent with The University of Adelaide requirements.

As detailed in your Ceremony Attendance Confirmation Letter, please visit the GFP Online Portal and follow the easy steps to order and pay for your academic dress hire (payable by VISA and Master Card only). If you are unable to pay by credit card please contact Customer Service at gowning@gfp.com.au or 1300 360 445.

Important: Please use your student email address when placing your order in the GFP Online Portal, to ensure that you receive the email containing your guest tickets.

Important: When logging into the portal, please ensure that you enter your student ID number without the ‘a’.

    More information about academic dress

Frequently asked questions about academic dress, including hire and purchase prices, can be found on the GFP website.

  • Step 4: download your guest tickets

At the time of ordering your Academic Dress, you will also need to download your guest tickets from the GFP Online Portal.

When logging into the portal, please ensure that you enter your student ID number without the ‘a’.

Once you have selected your Academic Dress sizes, you will be able to select the guest tickets that are available to you on the following page. This will display the two tickets that you receive as a graduate, as well as any additional tickets that have been allocated to you.

Once you have selected the quantity of tickets you wish to download and have placed your order, you will receive an email from GFP with your tickets attached.

Important: please use your student email address when placing your order in the GFP Online Portal, to ensure that you receive the email containing your guest tickets.

Please note that tickets will not be posted to students under any circumstances.

  • Step 5: attend your ceremony - what to expect

The Your Graduation at Adelaide brochure provides information about what will take place during your Graduation Ceremony.

On the day of your ceremony, you should arrive on campus approximately 90 minutes before the commencement of your ceremony to allow time to collect your Academic Dress and check in. When you arrive, you will need to make sure that you do the following:

    1. Visit GFP in the Union Building level 2, adjacent the Barr Smith Lawns (formerly the Unibooks store)
Here you will collect your Academic Dress from GFP. In addition to collecting your academic dress, you will also receive your graduate ticket. This ticket is required for entry into Bonython Hall, so even if you have hired your Academic Dress elsewhere you will still need to collect your graduate ticket from the Union Building.

If you have a morning ceremony, you will need to collect your gown between 8:00am and 9:45am on the day of your ceremony.
If you have an afternoon ceremony, you will need to collect your gown between 10:00am and 12:45pm on the day of your ceremony.

    2. Make sure your guests have their tickets
You will enter Bonython Hall much earlier than your guests, and they will require their tickets for entry. Please ensure that you provide your guests with their tickets in advance.

    3. If you are a coursework graduate, check in at the marquee on the Eastern side of Bonython Hall – no later than 45 minutes prior to your ceremony
Ensure that you have your graduate ticket, as you will need to present this for entry. Once you have checked in you will not be able to exit Bonython Hall until the end of the ceremony.

    4. If you are a PhD or Masters by Research graduate -  check in on level 1 of the Mitchell Building – no later than 45 minutes prior to your ceremony
Ensure that you have your graduate ticket, as you will need to present this for entry. Once you have checked in you will remain in the Mitchell Building until it is time for you to enter Bonython Hall as a member of the Academic Procession and take your seat on stage.

    Graduate briefing

It is important that you check in (at Bonython Hall or the Mitchell Building) on time, as there will be a pre-ceremony briefing approximately 45 minutes prior to the commencement of the ceremony. It is important that you pay close attention during the briefing as it includes information about how you will be presented on stage.

    During the ceremony

The Your Graduation at Adelaide brochure provides information about what will take place during your Graduation Ceremony.

If you are seated in the body of Bonython Hall (coursework graduates)

    • You will be guided to take up your position on the mark to stage right.
    • When your name is announced, walk towards the Chancellor and stop to shake hands. If you do not wish to shake the Chancellor's hand please keep your hands by your side and nod.
    • Receive your testamur(s) from the Chancellor and wait for your photograph to be taken; and
    • Exit the stage through the Western door and return to your seat. There will be ushers to direct you back to your seat.

If you are seated on stage (PhD and Masters by Research graduates)

    • When it is time to be presented, a staff marshal will ask you to stand and take up your position on the mark at stage right to have your name checked.
    • When your thesis title and name are announced walk towards the Chancellor and shake hands. If you do not wish to shake the Chancellor's hand please keep your hands by your side and nod.
