Has reproductive technology gone too far?

Tuesday, 14 August 2007

University of Adelaide researchers are world leaders in the field of assisted reproductive technology - but has this work gone too far, where is it heading, and what are the likely consequences?

These are just some of the questions being posed - and answered - at the latest of the University's free Research Tuesdays seminar series tonight (5.30pm, Tuesday 14 August).

"We are experiencing a reproductive revolution that is changing the way people think about fertility," says Professor Rob Norman, Director of the University of Adelaide's Research Centre for Reproductive Health.

"But with all of the benefits that come from this revolution, we must also consider the wider implications for individuals and society," he says.

"South Australia has been a world leader in the field of assisted reproductive techniques (ART) for many years. Unfortunately our legislators at State and Federal level have been unable to keep up with the ethical challenges of the methods used and the implications of emerging technologies such as the use of stem cells.

"There are also concerns about ART, including overuse of the technology and the risk of congenital abnormalities in children.

"Are our reproductive technologies too far ahead of the social and ethical consequences? If so, what can we do about it?" Professor Norman asks.

The Research Tuesdays public seminars - held on the second Tuesday of every month - are an initiative of the University of Adelaide, giving leading researchers an opportunity to engage with business, community leaders and the general public on issues that impact on them.
