Exciting collaborative opportunities to enhance learning
Learning Enhancement and Innovation’s Learning Design and Capability team and the Media Production Team is actively engaged in exciting new work with key stakeholders across the University of Adelaide.
The Course Continuous Improvement Process (CCIP) is an innovative approach to the continuous improvement and revision process for existing courses. Working with Learning Designers, Course Builders and multimedia experts in the Media Production team (MPT) over a 6-week period, to explore and identify opportunities for course enhancement and then constructively work on solutions to advance learning.
Successes so far
Course Continuous Improvement
In the Course Transformation space, our Learning Designers completed the first total re-design of a course in collaboration with CC Dr Mandi Carr from the School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences. The new course reflects contemporary theory and best practice in blended learning and user-experience principles.
In the redesigned Ruminant Health and Production course, students complete online self-directed topics before attending face-to-face classes. The MyUni course contains engaging activities, readings, pre-recorded videos, and knowledge check quizzes to encourage students’ active learning. After attending the face-to-face sessions (a combination of lectures, workshops, tutorials, and practicals) the cohort further applies their knowledge via online activities including interactive case studies. Feedback from the coordinator and students has been very positive, and early indications are that the course has helped to enhance and support student learning.
Targeted Enhancement
The first block of development involved 10 courses, with each needing to be deployed in time for Semester 1 teaching this year. Targeted examples included the development of new multimedia resources, improvements to formative and summative tasks, re-designs of the course user experience, and constructive alignment of content to assessment. Initial feedback from CCs is extremely positive, both in terms of the outcomes of the work done, but also in the personable and collaborative capability building approach that LEI is characterised by.
Moving forward
The team is thrilled by the positive collaborations with our colleagues throughout the University, and initial student feedback reflects the effort and care shown throughout. In the wake of the changes occurring throughout the higher education sector, the CCIP demonstrates a fantastic model to ensure a quality learning experience for our students and that academics receive support for a variety of emerging teaching and learning challenges.
