Worried students will use AI in your quiz assessment? There is a solution!

Given the recent rapid advances in Artificial Intelligence, particularly Chat GPT – a natural language processing tool – there has been some concern and debate around how staff and students can best take advantage of this technology, while assuring academic integrity in assessments.

Quiz-based assessments containing multiple choice and short answer essay or discussion questions have been identified as particularly vulnerable (HERDSA, 2023). There is therefore a need for new and consistent assessment design approaches with supported tools in MyUni that can help protect assessment integrity in University of Adelaide courses and programs.

One such tool is Respondus Lockdown Browser (RLB). This tool helps mitigate the risk of any academic dishonesty by preventing students from accessing other materials, websites or Artificial Intelligence tools while taking an invigilated Quiz assessment in MyUni.

It disables the navigation to other web pages, applications, and also stops copy-pasting, screenshots, and any attempt to print the quiz contents.

Respondus Lockdown Browser has been available in Computer Exam Rooms for several years and works with both Canvas Classic and New Quizzes. However, it is also now also possible for students to take a MyUni Quiz assessment on their own devices in a class under invigilation once Lockdown Browser has been installed.

Learning Enhancement and Innovation will be offering a series of virtual workshops, designed to familiarize academics and professional staff with Respondus Lockdown Browser through demonstration, practice and discussion around use of the tool. During the workshop, you will go through installing and setting up the tool, accessing it within the MyUni environment and experiencing the quiz as a student.

To register for the workshop, please select a session on this Respondus Lockdown Browser Training page. We encourage you to also review the available resources on MyUni Learning Centre before coming to the workshop.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Learning Design and Capability team: learningdesigner@adelaide.edu.au

We look forward to seeing you at one of the upcoming workshops!
