Need help with referencing?

Referencing is integral when studying at the University and we’ve got some tips to help make it a little bit easier!

  1. Don’t forget to record all bibliographic information while you’re still using the resource. There is nothing more annoying than returning a book only to find you forgot to reference that obscure quote from page … oh, what was it again?! Don’t forget – you must acknowledge all sources used to avoid plagiarism.
  2. Consult our Referencing Support page. There are plenty of different referencing styles and having a guide on-hand will make it easier for you to remember which element fits in where.
  3. Remember to keep your referencing style consistent! Check with your tutor to determine exactly which style you’re supposed to be using.
  4. Use referencing software – if you’re studying multiple topics at once it can be difficult to keep track of all your sources. Referencing software, such as Endnote, integrates with word processing programs to create citations and bibliographies in the citation style of your choice, and you can have multiple bibliographies on Endnote so you’ll never get confused.
  5. Always double-check everything before submitting. Ensure that all of your in-text references correspond to the correct reference in your bibliography.
  6. Browse our Referencing subject guide for more links to helpful referencing and academic writing guides.
